One could argue that the core of Jesus’ teaching, if you distilled it down to one phrase, would be “Love one another.” Simple to understand; sometimes hard to do. In fact, when asked which was the greatest commandment, Jesus responded to a religious leader of His day by saying that the entire Old Testament, the Law and the Prophets, could be summed up in one command: “’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” (Matthew 22:37-40)
So what does that look like? How do you love God and love your neighbor in concrete, tangible ways? What are the attributes, attitudes, and actions that demonstrate this kind of love? We are going to be tackling these questions in our upcoming sermon series at Black Rock, “Love WORKS” starting April 23rd, and we will be studying what Jesus said about what matters most.
As we examine what Jesus taught about loving one another – and how He modeled a life of loving others – we will learn how we can better represent Him to a watching world desperate to see this kind of love in action. Black Rock aspires to be a church that not only lives out this kind of love among each other but also extends this love to our community. As part of this series, our entire church will be invited to participate in a day (Saturday, May 20th) where we demonstrate this love by serving in our community - a Love Works Day - in Fairfield and our surrounding towns. Mark your calendar now to be a part of this awesome community outreach day!
I invite you to join us here at Black Rock for the next six weeks as we learn how to better live out the love Jesus demonstrated to us – in His teaching and how He loved others – so we can model how His love works.
